Tips for Going Out to Bid

Tip #6, Emergency and Disaster Service

This is the 6th in a series of "ten tips" discussing going out to bid on electronic security systems brought to you by the AVS Educational Academy. We would love to receive some feedback to see if you find the tips beneficial. Please e-mail us if you get a chance.

(1) It is Sunday and the weather forecasters are predicting a good old-fashioned blizzard for your area. People are being told to stay home from work Monday so the roads can be cleared.

The problem is that your access control system automatically unlocks your doors at 8:00 a.m. on normal workdays. This means that there won't be anyone at work and the building will be unsecured.

How do you secure the building if YOU can't make it into work?

(2) You are in the middle of a major snowstorm and need service because of some type of system failure. The integrator has dispatched a service technician but, because of the snow, the service van (vans are terrible in the snow) is stuck along the road and there is no telling what time they will reach your site.

You need to leave, but can't until the system is back up and running. What are you going to do?

Suggestion:

(1) If you do not have your own remote capabilities for your access system, make sure that the integrators that you are considering do have remote diagnostic capabilities for just such a situation. The integrator's emergency staff should have the ability to connect to your system remotely, not only for diagnostic services, but also for training and situations just like the above. A technician can simply connect to your system and override the program or lock your doors manually. You need to make sure that the access is password protected.

(2)The second topic for discussion concerns an emergency service call during a blizzard or other natural disaster. Does the integrator have four-wheel drive vehicles as part of their service fleets? It is well known that your typical service van will not operate well in a snowstorm.

When you are evaluating your service provider, make sure you discuss emergency and disaster service with your integrator ahead of time; you will be glad you did.

The Team AVS Educational Academy was created seven years ago to provide information to end users on designing systems and selecting integrators. We currently offer a wide selection of courses including Introduction to CCTV, Introduction to Access Control, Extreme Customer Service and Selecting an Integrator.
